Aggressive interactions between juvenile swordfishes and blue sharks in the Western Mediterranean: a widespread phenomenon?

There are numerous reports of billfishes spearing objects, marine organisms, and even humans. Whether or not this behaviour is intentional and, if so, what is its functional meaning, are open questions. In 2016, an adult blue shark (Prionace glauca) was found to be killed by a juvenile swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the western Mediterranean. Here we report on three more recent cases involving both species in the same area. Summary Crocodilians are known to vocalize within the egg shortly before hatching [1,2]. Although a possible function of these calls — inducing hatching in siblings and stimulating the adult female to open the nest — has already been suggested, it has never been experimentally tested [1–5]. Here, we present the first experimental evidence that pre-hatching calls of Nile crocodile ( Crocodylus niloticus ) juveniles are informative acoustic signals which indeed target both siblings and mother.
Evaluation of a rapid immunochromatographic test for the detection of low burden Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm) in dogs and cats

The performance of a rapid immunochromatographic test for the detection of Dirofilaria immitis antigens (Speed Diro™; BVT-Virbac, France) was assessed in 49 experimentally infected dogs and in 244 naturally infected animals; 142 dogs and 102 cats. In experimentally infected dogs, Speed Diro™ showed a sensitivity of 90.9% in dogs infected with one adult female worm and 100% in dogs infected with more than one female worm. Specificity was 100%. For naturally infected dogs, the Knott test and PetChek® HTWM PF served as reference methods for microfilaremia and antigenemia, respectively. Our aim was to assess to what extent detection of differential timing of passage in migrant birds depends on the sampling frequency (SF). We determined if Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla performed differential migration by age and sex when passing over N Iberia. We mist netted and ringed migrating Blackcaps at a stopover site, both during the autumn (2005) and the spring (2006) migrations. During autumn, adult female Blackcaps passed later than juvenile birds and adult males. In spring, however, migration differed mainly by sex rather than by age. Sister-chromatid exchange in cultured lymphocytes of ewes and their newborn lambs

The incidence of sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) in cultured lymphocytes of ewes and their newborn lambs was determined using the BrdU-Giemsa technique. In all ewe-lamb pairs, the SCE rate in the lambs was less than that of the ewes. The mean SCE frequencies per chromosome of the ewes after lambing and of the newborn lambs were 0.1909 and 0.1581, respectively. The statistical analysis shows that a significant difference exists between SCE in the adult female sheep and their lambs. At the same time, a negative correlation was observed between SCE rate and cell proliferation. The results of this study are compared with those of previous reports on age-dependency of SCE.
Intraoperative Parathyroid Hormone Monitoring During Parathyroidectomy for Hyperparathyroidism in Waiting List and Kidney Transplant Patients

This report describes the use of the intraoperative parathyroid hormone (ioPTH) assay during parathyroidectomy in waiting list and transplanted patients. ioPTH levels were determined in 40 patients on the waiting list for kidney transplantation with secondary hyperparathyroidism who underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy and 9 transplanted patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism who underwent removal of hyperplasic glands. Rapid PTH levels decreased significantly at each time period; the percentage decrease in rapid PTH levels was 61.3% among patients with IPT II and 70.2% in patients with IPT III at 10 minutes and 86.5% in patients with IPT II and 91% in patients with IPT III at 15 minute…

The fibrous hyperplasia of the palate (fibroma) is a benign tumor which has its origin in the soft tissue and whose frequency is estimated to be 1.2% on adult subjects. Rarely the size exceeds the cm, but in these cases a complaint of increasing difficulty of mastication and swallowing appears. We describe the case of a young white woman affected with two peculiar symmetric lesions of the secondary hard palate, that could be the consequence of an abnormal answer to a chronic inflammatory stimulation.

Abstract Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV (HSAN-IV), is a rare and severe autosomal recessive disorder. We report on an adult female patient whose clinical findings during childhood were not recognized as CIPA. There was neither complete anhidrosis nor a recognizable sensitivity to heat.
